A Second Life

After a little bit of nudging, I finally re-downloaded and installed Second Life. I couldn't recall a damn thing about my prior account, and I think I actually requested it deleted but I can't remember, so I created a new one.

Lucia and Zan had been nudging me in another game, as it is where both of them frequent, and so my dear little doll and I created avatars. They're building a role play sim in connection to another set of sims, all of which are part of Delirium's Threshold. The system is very sound for explaining the non-DT elements that people encounter in SL, which also allows for exploration elsewhere in the world.

Since I do a lot of work with 3D modeling and a bit of animation in things like Poser, Carrara and Bryce, Lucia is pretty confident that I can get building down fairly quickly. My biggest weakness is texturing though - while I can do a lot with photoshop and manipulation, complex textures are a lot harder than what I've been doing.I've made a few alright things - particularly a particle effect stave, and more recently a functioning little black dress and a white tube top. Nothing fantastic, but more than some make in their first few months of SL, let alone with in the first few weeks. I actually had the staff basics set up within about five days of starting.

For those wondering, I started on January 16th, 2008 in the late evening. It may have been the 17th here on the East Coast, but everything in SL tracks in PST time.

I've got a fairly small avatar, so a lot of my practice has been resizing objects to myself, which makes it easier to figure out how to make them. I have to take them apart down to their cores, and then work my way back up. The only one I can't do that to is Lucia's "Cyrian Noble Skirt", its just to complicated.

Currently, I'm watching her build the Cyrian castle. It amazes me the kind of prims she can sculpt, especially since my little attempts at Wings 3D and zBrush have been less than successful. I'm trying though!
